Memorial Day Parade
For the last few years The Maplewood Garden Club has joined lots of other community groups and marched in the Maplewood Memorial Day Parade. We dressed in our MGC finest (T shirts) and proudly carried our club banner through the streets of Maplewood, bedecked in flowers and toting our favorite garden tools, to great acclaim from the whole community along the avenue.
We plan to join the parade again this year and I invite all Garden Club members to join in and promote our fabulous Club as we remember the sacrifices so many have made that so that we can now enjoy the freedoms and liberty we have living in our wonderful town.
To prepare for the parade we will have a workshop at the Dehart Community Center (120 Burnett Ave, Maplewood) on Sunday, May 18 from 10 am to noon, where we can create decorative wearable floral art. Bring a hat or an article of clothing to embellish or create a piece from scratch. We’ll supply all the flowers (artificial, of course) and necessary materials for sewing, gluing, wiring or whatever it might take to conjure your floral vision.
Please let Kathy Kohlman (kpkohlman@gmail.com) know if you plan to attend so we can have enough supplies on hand! For your convenience, a sign-up sheet will be available at the April and May meetings.
The Township Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 26 and we will gather at 9:00 am in the parking lot across from Columbia High School, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Valley Street. The Parade route is 0.6 miles long on mostly flat ground.
It proceeds up Jefferson Avenue. and turns onto Maplewood Avenue, then onto Baker Street and back along Valley Street to end in front of Town Hall, where the Township Memorial Day program will be held.
So, let’s show off our love of gardening and join the many other township clubs and associations as we promenade through the neighborhood promoting our wonderful Club and reflecting on the purpose of the day.
